Both Saheed and Scott, along with Derek Nakluski and Coach Terry Goodenough, will be traveling to Europe later this summer to race in the Flanders Series of meets (Belgium). Congratulations!

TOC Wins Four Medals at National Cross Country Championships

Derek Nakluski

GUELPH, ON (November 29, 2008) -The condition of the 2008 National Cross Country Championships were considerably different from the 2007 version. Sunny skies and milder temperatures combined to produce a sloppy course. Unlike last year’s hard packed ice and snow, this year the course featured loose snow and mud. Twelve or even fifteen millimetre pins were favoured by most competitors. Despite the conditions, TOC athletes won three team medals and one individual medal. The senior men’s team of Derek Nakluski, Saheed Khan, Scott Emberley and Kevin Smith won the bronze medal. This is TOC’s first senior men’s team medal at the National Championships in a very long time. Along the way Derek qualified for the World Cross Country Championships (Amman, Jordan, March 28, 2009) with his 8th place finish. Saheed Khan seeking his first national team berth, placed 11th, good enough to be considered for selection.

The junior men’s team (Aleks Kuternin, Anthony Berkis, Eric Dillon, Jake Graham, Hussein Hashi, Nicholas Reay), led by Aleks Kuternin’s individual bronze medal, won the team silver medal. With his third place finish, Aleks also qualified for the World Cross Country Championships. The junior men’s race featured a thrilling, if not controversial, finish with the first four finishers all within 2 seconds of each other.

The fourth medal, the team silver, was won in the first championship race of the day by the Masters Men 30-39. Congratulations to Jeff Enfield, Jason Matthews, Ian Sinclair and Brian Lovshin. Congratulations to the entire team and their coaches!!

Guelph, ON (December 1, 2007) - Congratulations to the entire TOC team for a great day of competition at the National Cross Country Championships in frigid Guelph.

In the same masters race, Beth Primrose and Colleen Hopkins were 3rd and 4th respectively. Colleen was the 40+ gold medallist and Beth the 45+ gold medallist. And of course, Jerry Kooymans won the 50+ mens gold medal.

Then the junior men hit the slopes, (oops it wasn't a cross country ski event was it?) and won the team title to be Canadian Junior Champions. Our four top runners all finishing in the top 20 (Hughes 3rd, Kuternin 5th, Bruce 12th and Berkis 20th).

2007 Canadian Cross Country Championship Senior Men's Race

Hughes, Kuternin and Nakluski will join Dave Christiani in Florida for NACAC and Edinburgh for World Championships. I will be Canada's head coach at both championships. As well, some of you may not be aware, but Terry Goodenough, who coaches our satellite group in Waterloo was named to the coaching staff for the FISU Cross Country Championships in France in March 2008.

And ..., this is all on top of the tremendous accomplishments already in the books for this cross country season; OFSAA, OTFA, Masters Series title, etc. Great job TOC!
