Training Camp Huge Success in Chilly Florida

2010 Florida Training Camp

Clermont, FL (February 20, 2010) - Cold, what cold? This is really good cross country weather. It was 10 degrees and raining on the first day of the Florida Training Camp. Fartleks and hills were the order of the day. It was perfect! So was the weather for the remaining days of the camp; sunny and usually 14-17 degrees with one day hitting 21. Tyson Gay's sprint club abandoned their workout on the same day our guys went shirtless; enough said.

I would like to congratulate all the participants! I always remember what Dr. Bob Moore once said at another TOC training camp a few years ago in Wilmington, North Carolina. Two a day workouts were the norm then as they were in Florida, and for many, they had never experienced back to back 2 a day workouts. Bob's response to their wonder at being able to complete the workouts was simple; "the human body has an amazing capacity to do work". But, as I have often said, it's human nature to be comfortable. I hope you all learned something over the course of the training camp about yourself. At the very least, don't be comfortable when training or racing; push yourself. Let this experience be a catalyst for improvement in performances for the remaining indoor season and the outdoor season.

TOC Wins Four Medals at National Cross Country Championships

Derek Nakluski

GUELPH, ON (November 29, 2008) -The condition of the 2008 National Cross Country Championships were considerably different from the 2007 version. Sunny skies and milder temperatures combined to produce a sloppy course. Unlike last years hard packed ice and snow, this year the course featured loose snow and mud. Twelve or even fifteen millimetre pins were favoured by most competitors. Despite the conditions, TOC athletes won three team medals and one individual medal. The senior mens team of Derek Nakluski, Saheed Khan, Scott Emberley and Kevin Smith won the bronze medal. This is TOCs first senior mens team medal at the National Championships in a very long time. Along the way Derek qualified for the World Cross Country Championships (Amman, Jordan, March 28, 2009) with his 8th place finish. Saheed Khan seeking his first national team berth, placed 11th, good enough to be considered for selection.

The junior mens team (Aleks Kuternin, Anthony Berkis, Eric Dillon, Jake Graham, Hussein Hashi, Nicholas Reay), led by Aleks Kuternins individual bronze medal, won the team silver medal. With his third place finish, Aleks also qualified for the World Cross Country Championships. The junior mens race featured a thrilling, if not controversial, finish with the first four finishers all within 2 seconds of each other.

The fourth medal, the team silver, was won in the first championship race of the day by the Masters Men 30-39. Congratulations to Jeff Enfield, Jason Matthews, Ian Sinclair and Brian Lovshin. Congratulations to the entire team and their coaches!!

Hughes, Kuternin and Nakluski will join Dave Christiani in Florida for NACAC and Edinburgh for World Championships. I will be Canada's head coach at both championships.
