2024 World Athletics Cross Country Championship
The 2024 World Athletics Cross Country Championship was held on March 30, 2024 in Belgrade, Serbia. Toronto Olympic Club’s junior athlete, Muriel Lovshin, was choosen to represent Canada to compete in the U20 Women category. At the age of 17, this is already her second Team Canada selection after the World’s Cross Country Championship in Bathurst, Australia last year.
The women’s U20 race is the first event of the day, looping 3 times around Friendship Park for a total distance of 6km. 92 athletes from 21 countries entered the race including 6 Canadians. The day was sunny and hotter than normal at 28C.
Muriel started off close to other Team Canada runner, completed the first lap in 7:12 in 63rd place. In the second lap, Muriel kept working together with 2 other Canadians occupying 58th-60th place. She crossed the finish line in a time of 23:10 and placed 61th of the world. Team Canada was ranked 9th.
It is an honour for the Toronto Olympic Club to produce an athlete of Muriel’s calibre and to represent Canada on the world’s stage. Way to go for Muriel who will be going to Yale University in September to join the Bulldogs to continue her running journey.
