
Brian has coached the TOC Junior Program for the last six years, working with many athletes who have qualified for the City of Toronto Championships, school conference championships, regional championships and OFSAA Championships. A number of these athletes have earned medals or Top Ten placings. He has also coached athletes who qualified for several U.S. high school championship meets, including New Balance and Nike events.
At the club level, Brian has coached many athletes who have competed and won medals at provincial and national cross-country and track championships. He also coached one athlete who represented Team Canada at two World Junior U20 Cross Country Championships, finishing in the Top 20 in the U18 age group.
Brian has been involved in competitive sports for most of his life. He began running in Grade 2 as part of his school’s Kilometre Club after watching Terry Fox during his run across Canada. As a youth, Brian participated in many sports and activities, including hockey, soccer, baseball, Boy Scouts, cross-country and alpine skiing, walkathons, cross-country running, track, and road races.
In college, Brian competed on his school’s varsity cross-country team, winning a bronze medal at the 1990 OCAA Cross Country Championships. In 1993, he became an individual OCAA bronze medalist, and in 1991 he was named his college’s Male Varsity Athlete of the Year.
Brian also competed for his university in cross-country and indoor track. In 1993, after college, he joined the Toronto Olympic Club, where he trained and competed in road races, marathons, track, and cross-country races for the club.
Some of Brian’s memorable races include his marathon debut at the 1994 Columbus Marathon, the 1994 CRS Toronto Half Marathon, where he placed third in the 20–24 age group, the 2002 Boston Marathon, the 2005 World Masters Cross Country Championships in Spain, where he finished 14th in the M35 age group, and the 2011 World Masters Cross Country Championships in Sacramento, California.
Brian has been actively volunteering with TOC, participating in CRS road races and club events since 1993. He has served on the TOC Board of Directors since 2015, including five years as Vice President and six years as Club President. Brian was also a course marshal for the men’s and women’s marathons at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto as part of TOC’s marshal team.
Brian lives with his family in North Toronto. He comes from a family of avid distance runners and skiers. His two daughters competed for many years with Toronto Olympic Club at provincial, national, and international competitions. Brian’s eldest daughter currently competes in NCAA Division I cross-country and track in the Ivy League, where she studies Economics and French.
